The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - game 16

I'll make this quick. This game meant nothing as Tomlin had already decided to play reserves on offense and concede the 3rd spot to the Bolts. I don't like that way of thinking and I don't like ending the season with a loss and then heading to the POs. Bad karma. Are critical troops rested for next week. Probably, but so what? Can Ben play defensive end and help stop the run? I hope Tomlin, Le Beau and Arians prove me wrong 'cause their game plan and game calling - after having 10 days to think it over - sucked today against a piss-poor team. If they were caught thinking ahead to Jacksonville and how to stop them, well, Lord help us all.

Dagnammit! Last week our defense gets schooled in the air, this week they get schooled on the ground to the tune of 224 yards. This team is playing its worst football of the year at exactly the wrong time. But I’m being a kind homer. Moving further away from my black and gold colored glasses I could say without a doubt this team is not an elite team and if it makes the playoffs it would most likely last one game whether at home or on the road. Why? This team can’t impose its will on other teams on a consistent basis. In the past six weeks they have been dominated by defenses in the passing game (go count sacks allowed and add 5 more for today) and the defense has been exposed as incapable of stopping good playoff-bound teams on the ground or the air. Does the loss of Aaron Smith weigh that heavily? Possibly, but the loss of Ryan Clark is being felt like an 8.0 earthquake every single time Anthony Smith gets burned for a TD at an inopportune time. That’s 4 and counting.

Well, there you have it: we got slogged pretty badly. Very bad time for the Steeler defense to lay an egg, and a big one it was. The ex-jock color man for CBS made a clever comment about the game: Being that this was not a do-or-die game for the Steelers it was merely a fact-finding mission. Well, I tell you what the “facts is”: it was a close game until the Patsies basically told the Steelers’ defensive staff they could not run on them so they were going to pass the rest of the way. And they did ad nauseam, without pressure, or sacks or picks, without even using max-protect. They picked our pass defense apart, period. Do you understand now that running your mouth to get camera time is NOT the Steeler way, Mr. Smith?

You know, folks around the country are going to think the Steelers moved to Seattle. The bungles wish we would. Had it not been for the turnovers I think we squash the bungles in an ugly, one-sided game. But if pigs had wings we wouldn’t go outdoors. If that aspect gets minimized or eliminated next game we will all be in for a whale of a contest unless there’s an asterisk somewhere that I missed. Before I start babbling lets move on to…

Gaawwwwd that was an awful game to watch! Major train wreck. I guarantee you only Steelers fans were awake when the clock hit zero and even though we won, lots of folks are laughing at us right now and with good reason. The weather and field conditions influenced the game? Please, don’t go there – it’s an argument that has no legs. I do hope the team’s management saw the Miami punt that landed in the “sod” looking exactly like a javelin would, spiked halfway into the crap. Take note folks: the Steelers and their players deserve a better surface to play on. Anyways, this game should have been a rout but the offense kept shooting itself in the foot. The more they screwed up the more life they breathed on the woeful fish. Almost turned them into sharks. But enough blubbering, on to…….

The Good – Good? You are kidding me again, right?? NOTHING good can come to losing to the sorry jets, nothing!!!

The Bad – Hoo boy, where do I start?? On offense the o-line gave no running room for Parker and did a sorry job pass-protecting Ben. Now, if that was the analysis following a game against the Colts or Pats I would have no problem, those are good teams with good defenses. But the jets were dead last in defense i...

There you have it, another classic game in the stains-Steelers rivalry and this one was a Special Teams induced one at that. It was a tale of two halves as the stains took advantage of every Steeler mistake to take a 12 point lead to the locker room. But the old browns showed up against the Steel Curtain the entire second half and had their upset bid cruelly squashed like a pumpkin smacked by an I-beam. Looks like the stains have indeed improved since week one, not that it matters to us unless they happen to be a play-off opponent. Cleveland and playoffs? Now I’m really rambling, so on to…

It was a near perfect performance: the ruthless demolition of a hated opponent and a celebration of history, lineage and tradition all rolled into one glorious, rainy night. I envy the folks that were there to see in the flesh that vengeance, in fact, is a dish best served cold and wet. So what can we take from this game? For one, these teams, much like last year, are headed in opposite directions. The Steelers have an improved offense and defense, the ratirds have slipped on both sides , injuries or not, especially on offense. Can you say “high draft pick”, rm? Sad to see a warrior like McNair extinguished as a player of impact in this league, but I’m afraid he’s done. Ray Ray is McNair’s defensive counterpart – a once-dominant player whose only undiminished talent now is his vocal diarrhea attack. Makes me warm and fuzzy all over to see them fall apart. But enough babbling, on to……

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends!!! And what a show it was to start off the 75th season of professional football in Pittsburgh, circa 2007: The Steelers crushed the stains at the Mistake by the Lake II on opening day – I could not have asked for a better birthday present than that. C’mon, admit it. Even though it was the stains you have to be impressed by the Steelers’ efforts, especially their defense. And this should put an end to any butterfly-in-belly action Mike Tomlin was feeling and gets him ready for opening day at home next week. But enough rambling, on to…

Predictions

I know it's a little early to make season predictions, but what the heck, work is slow today.

Game 1: Steelers vs Browns
-This game is in Cleveland, but I don't think it matters. Seriously, sometimes I think there are more Steelers fans than Browns fans in Cleveland. And you can't blame them.
-Browns best move was taking Thomas with the no. 3 pick. Worst move taking Quinn.
-Steelers win this one by a land slide. 28-3. Sorry Romeo, it may be time to move on.
